So there's this guy known as The Inspector, right, who wears a trenchcoat, bowler hat and carries a device known as a "Quantum Spanner". He has an endearing habit of addressing his Associates (of which there have been many) as 'constable'. Oh, and he's also a time-travelling alien who came to our planet in a red telephone box. Sound familiar? The cult British TV show first came to prominence after Britta recommended it to Abed, who needed a new series/obsession after Cougarton Abbey ran its unexpectedly brief course. From there the show has become much more than a mere in-joke (one episode is centred on an Inspector Spacetime convention, where Pierce's feedback at a focus group helps bring an obligatory -and inferior- American remake to life), with Travis Richey, the (real) actor who played The Inspector in its introductory scene, even launching a Kickstarter campaign to produce a spin-off series of webisodes. In true head-scratching style, it's hard to tell where Community draws the line between pop culture parody and fully-fledged plot thread. But then again, to quote the Inspector himself, the question isn't where, but when.
