Before becoming a quagmire of political allegories, before turning all moral boundaries into indiscernible blurs, Attack on Titan gave us some of the best backs-to-the-wall action we have ever seen. When it came to heroes making desperate stands against overwhelming enemy force, no one did it better.

Spearheading that charge against humanity’s greatest enemy, was Captain Levy Ackerman. The man who won over the entire internet with his loveless facials and indomitable battle prowess, every time he took to the air, it meant something big was about to go down.

His crowning moment came during the return to Shiganshina arc. As the Survey Corps fought to retake Wall Maria and get to Grisha Yeager’s basement, in order to discover the truth of the world, Levi, Erwin and the majority of their forces find themselves trapped in the Beast Titan’s long range attacks. Despite his best efforts, Levi himself isn’t left unscathed.

Forced to make the hardest decision imaginable, Erwin declares he and the rest of their forces will serve as bait, while Levi is left free to launch one final, decisive attack. Cue the greatest the counter attack in television history. As Erwin’s final charge draws the Beast Titan’s attention, Levi embarks on that legendary, otherworldly killing spree, slicing through an army of Titans before engaging Zeke in the deciding duel.

Another incredible sequence later, Zeke is on the verge of obliteration. It required a last second save from the Cart Titan to allow the older Yeager sibling to get away, as Levi and the survivors reclaim Shiganshina.
