10 Greatest Anime Openings Of All Time

3. BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad

Naruto Shippuden
TV Tokyo

Bands have frequently proved a popular subject matter in anime and BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad runs away with the best intro trophy. The opening kicks off with the fun rock track Hit in the USA playing over what feels like a new teen group’s debut music video. A perfect fit for the story of adolescent lead character Koyuki and his budding involvement with the rock band BECK.

The creation of the band changes Koyuki’s life for ever as the group conquer America and rise to international superstardom. Serving as a poignant, often funny coming of age tale, BECK’s intro is pitch perfect in setting the tone for the series. Overflowing with bandmates infighting, crudely phrased t-shirts and the kind of colourful billboards one might see in Las Vegas, the intro provides a road trip story for its characters. We see them performing, having fun with life on the road and making their way through the diverse landscape of the United States. Their musical journey takes them across everything from lonely desert roads to the bright lights of Times Square.
