Christopher Eccleston gets some stunning moments in his sole Doctor Who series, but nothing compares to his enigmatic "world turning" speech from Rose.

So good was this moment that it was shown repeatedly on chat shows in the promotion for Doctor Who's big return in 2005. It's also a very telling speech about where the Ninth Doctor's head is at during this stage of the story.

For all his talk of "stupid apes" and his apparent reluctance to have someone else travel with him, it's all bluster. Just look at this speech - Rose asks him who he is and he delivers a poetic monologue about being able to feel the turn of the Earth:

"We're falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world, and if we let go... that's who I am."

Then he tells Rose to forget he even existed. But no way is that the speech you deliver to someone you don't want to see again.

The Doctor wants and needs Rose with him, and he's already realized this. Everything else is a test, from their conversation about the Auton arm, to the speech about the turn of the Earth. It's all a test to see if she'll give up and go back to her everyday life, or take a chance and let go of the Earth.
