Nowadays it seems as though every TV show ever made has had a go at a "musical" episode, and the results - as you can no doubt have probably guessed - have been mixed. "Once More, With Feeling," the seventh episode of Buffy the Vampire's sixth season, however, is - without question - the best and most accomplished musical episode to have ever featured in a TV series. Not only did it start the trend, but it set the standard to impossibly high levels. What's more, you don't need to like Buffy to enjoy it.

Musical episodes, generally speaking, don't really make sense: Buffy is pretty much the only show with a musical episode that still works within the context of the show. Sure, the fact that the characters find themselves suddenly bursting into song is credited to the arrival of a dancing demon named "Sweet," but Buffy has always excelled in making naff plotlines great. No, it's not perfect, and the cast can't exactlysing, but it is totally immersive, and the songs - written by Joss Whedon - are all magnificent.
