10 Greatest Wise Asses in TV History

7. Louie De Palma €“ Taxi

€œI love this. A duel of wits between unarmed opponents.€ A thoroughly loathsome character. He€™s debauched, deranged and in delirium whenever confronted with the unfortunate lot of another human being. And yet none of this seems as sharply abhorrent as it should be. Perhaps it€™s for the simple fact of Danny Devito€™s diminutive size but there€™s so much more to it than that. It€™s the performance. It€™s the flashing whites of his eyes which abound with devious skulduggery. It€™s his megalomaniacal march around the garage ordering drivers and mechanics to debase themselves beyond belief, before skipping up the steps to his wire-meshed bird€™s nest to start again over a tannoy. €œI hope a passenger slams a door on your nose so when you sneeze your head explodes.€ Devito€™s character, though perhaps a little dated in the lack of swearing we€™d expect from him today, is seminal. There are flashes of brilliance and moments of kindness over an undercurrent of Capitalistic dastardliness, the likes of which only Alexei Sale could perceive in his mind€™s eye. Most importantly, for our purpose today at least, Louie De Palma exudes one truly €˜Wise Ass€™ mainstay which all should have: he should make you never want to involve him in anything, he€™ll have nothing helpful or comforting to add.

A. J. S. Scott was created as a homunculus by a mad English Alchemist who was trying to make rum from ink and seawater. He is still a fan of both and he has no comment on what happened to all the ‘No Exit’ signs in Islington Underground Station when he visited for Beltaine. You can send him missives by bribing the Right Raven with sour-strings, or: Instagram: @ajsscott Tumblr: andrew-scott-things.tumblr.com
