10 Hilarious TV Running Gags That Lasted An Insanely Long Time

Parks and Recreation has its own version of the Toby gag with Jerry, although in this case, the entire office inexplicably hates him despite the fact that he's a rather lovable guy. There's one thing that Leslie dislikes even more than Jerry, though: libraries.

Early on in the series, it's established that Leslie Knope has a bitter rivalry with the Pawnee Public Library. Apparently the people who run it really hate her, and she refers to the whole department as being lead by a "diabolical, ruthless bunch of bureaucrats." At one point, she's forced to stop in there with Ann, and she calls the librarian a "punkass book jockey" before knocking a bunch of things over and storming out. Amazing. 

This extends beyond even this particular library, and across the series, it's made clear that Leslie hates all libraries because of her experience with this one. The Jerry gag is funny, but there's at least some basis for people making fun of him because of how goofy and clumsy he is. With the library, it's so great because it's such an innocent thing for Leslie to have this seething hatred for. This is her number one enemy in the world? The concept of libraries?

The running gag has a beautiful cap in the series finale where, much to Leslie's chagrin, a library is named after her. "The f***ing library?"
