10 Horror TV Shows That Broke All The Rules

6. Black Mirror - It Made Us The Monster

It’s a bit of a rule of thumb that to bring in some intrigue, your villain or monster has to be really weird and interesting. People like to be able to look at something gross and scary and go “hell yeah, that looks like horror!” So what if you were to be told the villain has been you all along?

Although lots of discourse around this Charlie Brooker offering is absolutely rancid and full of self-importance (we all dunk on Rick and Morty fans but the real ‘I’m smarter than you’ O.Gs came from Black Mirror), underneath all the hype there is a solid reason for it. Black Mirror, fundamentally, is a very well-made show.

Yes, some episodes are better than others, but they all deal with the central problem of humanity itself and what we are doing to each other. The real horror of the whole show comes down to what we as people are capable of, whether that is killing each other, torturing people or ruining our own lives in search of others’ approval.

This absolutely is a pretentious entry but Black Mirror requires a certain base level of pretension to which we should all be entitled. The show, in spite of all its flaws, has made a definite cultural impact and I think it does us all good to be reminded of our own monstrous potential sometimes. Maybe one day we’ll start doing better!
