The biggest new kid on the streaming block is Disney+ and while its Star Wars and Marvel shows have grabbed most of the headlines, fairy tales remain a huge cornerstone of the Disney brand, and with the series Book Of Enchantment the Mouse House were hoping to tap into that audience as well.

Book Of Enchantment was to be an adaptation of Serena Valentino's villains series, a set of books published by Disney Press focusing on the stories of the studio's classic fairytale villains.

Quantico's Michael Seitzman was attached as showrunner and he wrote a pilot script and assembled a writers room working on further scripts. Locations were scouted to begin shooting imminently in Britain before Disney pulled the plug in August, having already spent over $4 million on Book Of Enchantment's development.

The early scripts turned in by Seitzman and his team had a far darker tone than the studio were used to in their family-friendly villain rehabilitation franchises such as the Disney Channel's Descendants movies or even the slightly more mature Once Upon A Time or Maleficent.

With Disney+ looking for content that the whole family could enjoy, Book Of Enchantment was deemed just too adult. A reported price tag well in excess of $100 million for the first season alone probably didn't help either.
