During the Golden Age of The Simpsons, the show was at its absolute funniest (arguably). Deftly blending silly slapstick humor (Homer’s failed attempt to leap Springfield Gorge on a skateboard in Bart’s place, for instance, which saw him striking his head on the side of the gorge all the way down) with sophisticated satire and cultural references is no mean feat, but the show can pull it off effortlessly when it wants to.

That’s the brilliance of The Simpsons: in any given scene, anything can be funny. It’s not just about the dialogue, it’s also about those many visual jokes you may have missed.

From taffy shops named Call Me Delish-Mael to movies titled McBain’s Valentine’s Day Kick-Assacre, you’re really doing The Simpsons a disservice if you simply have it on in the background. Some of the funniest parts of all are on the screen only for the briefest moment. A seminar about appropriate workplace behavior is given at the power plant, with the speaker surrounded by signs displaying slogans such as “Keep entendres single” and “privates should be private.” That’s just brilliant.
