10 Louis Theroux Documentaries You Need To Watch Before You Die
8. Extreme Love: Dementia
Despite being widely known for his documentaries focused on bizarre and fringe subcultures, Theroux has also produced numerous lesser-known films focusing on mental health issues and long-term neurological disorders.
One of the most moving examples being his 2012 series Extreme Love - which looked at impact of having a close family member suffering from either autism or dementia.
Whilst both were utterly heart-breaking to watch, the dementia episode in particular stands out as a horrifying picture of the degenerative condition.
Throughout the documentary, Theroux met a variety of suffers and got to experience first-hand their day-to-day struggles and gave a voice to the families who are forced to watch their loved one slowly slip away.
Although there are a wealth of documentaries focusing on similar issues out there, Theroux's inclusion of Selina Hope Border, a 49-year-old suffering from Early-onset Alzheimer's disease, helps it to stand out as one of the best.
Seeing close-up the incongruity of a physically fit woman suffering from the same cognition issues as someone almost twice her age fully brought home the stark reality that none of us are safe from the condition.
Against the backdrop of our rapidly ageing society there is no doubt that this documentary is one of the hardest to watch, but it may also be the most important.
