Although Theroux had already established himself as a documentarian who showcased all manner of colourful subjects, his 2003 documentary, Louis and the Nazis, marked a clear turning point in his career.

Whilst his previous films had focused largely on endearing eccentrics, this film was the first to bring attention to group with a truly insidious and dangerous ideology.

During his time in California, Theroux came face-to-face with a variety of Nazi-sympathisers including former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard Tom Metzger, who was once dubbed 'the most dangerous racist in America'.

He also visited a new generation of neo-Nazi skinheads which led to one of his most uncomfortable and potentially deadly encounters when one enquired about Theroux's own racial background.

Theroux's ability to keep his composure after they admit that, if there were no cameras, they would brutally assault him is astounding and a testament to his fearlessness as both a journalist and as a filmmaker.

Similarly, his ability to remain unfazed whilst watching the frankly sickening sight of 11-year-old neo-Nazi pop-duo Prussian Blue reciting white supremacist anthems allows the gravity of the horrific situation these children are in to really hit home.

Despite being over a decade old, at a time when white supremacist views are once again reaching the mainstream, it should still be considered essential viewing to showcase how poisonous and vicious these ideas are.
