9. James Michael Tyler, Who Played Gunther, Worked In A Real Coffee Shop Until Season 5

James Michael Tyler played Central Perk's legendary manager Gunther across the show's ten seasons, but believe it or not, the role wasn't too much of a stretch for him, as the actor actually worked in a Hollywood coffee shop, Bourgeois Pig, until the end of the show's fourth season.

Hilariously, Tyler was cast as Gunther less for his acting chops and more because he was the only extra who could convincingly operate the coffee machine on Central Perk's set.

Furthermore, Tyler's natural hair colour was brown, and he went to the Friends audition with white hair only because his friend was an apprentice hairdresser who needed to test their skills out on a willing participant. The producers liked the colour, so it became part of the character.

After Tyler won the recurring role, which saw him appear in 148 of the show's 236 episodes, he had to bleach his hair white every week for an entire decade. That's commitment.
