Caleb turned out to be much more deadly than originally suspected. He was only human, but channelled the power of The First. This misogynistic, sociopathic serial killer became a major problem for the Scooby Gang, as his connection to The First gave him powers such as super-strength and psychic abilities.
If defeating multiple slayers, Buffy, and Spike wasn't enough to prove his strength he also gouged out one of Xander's eyes. His fanatical obsession with his master and insanity made him a formidable opponent. Due to his connection to the First he is also able to be resurrected as long as his body is intact. He would also ask the First to take the form of girls he had killed in order to reenact the murder.
An insane, sadistic ex-priest who hated women and had super powers was possibly one of the most monstrous villains Buffy faced.
