10 More Overlooked Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episodes That Are Secretly Classics

8. Witch (Season 1, Episode 3)

The first of the real 'Monster of the Week' episodes, 'Witch' set a precedent that the remainder of the next two seasons would rigidly stick to before the show evolved into something else.

And whilst many other episodes would take its 'high school is hell' metaphor into stranger, more fantastical realms, 'Witch' brought the horror a little closer to home and remains a poignant episode to this day.

Whilst trying to regain a sense of normalcy in her life, Buffy tries out for the cheerleading squad, but soon finds that the cut-throat world of try-outs is a lot more sinister than she'd first suspected. It appears that someone is placing curses on the other hopefuls, and Buffy and her friends must discover the culprit before the pom-poms get bloody.

Amongst all the usual witchy tropes and stereotypes found throughout, there's an underlying story about the pressures that many youths face from their parents. Be it that they don't live up to expectations, or that they simply don't wish to follow in their footsteps. This episode takes the latter idea and spins it with the show's usual sharp writing into a devilishly fun-time that has a real message beneath all the cauldrons and black cats.
