5. Nadja - What We Do In The Shadows
No one who has ever turned into a vampire has come from a perfect place, but the cast of What We Do In The Shadows weren't far off. For example, Nandor the Relentless was an influential leader, and Laszlo was an English nobleman. However, for the delightfully macabre and devious Nadja of Antipaxos, becoming a vamp was her escape from a life of pain and suffering.
Nadja grew up in poverty, as her future roommate Nandor brutally raided her village 200 years before she was born, leaving it with nothing but the "stupidest" people left to rule. She grew up experiencing extreme famine, with her only source of warmth coming from burning donkey dung and then the donkeys themselves.
As if that wasn't bad enough, she then lost her mother to a bear attack. Her mother's Jade necklace, which Nadja carried afterwards, even absorbed her screams as the bear tore her apart. Walking around listening to your mother's death screams? What a delightful inheritance.
Becoming a vampire seemed to be where Nadja's life (or unlife, technically) really turned around. That's right, turning into a monstrous creature of the night was an improvement on what came before.
