10 Most Controversial Series Finales In TV History
8. Gossip Girl
The Gossip Girl finale is a weird one to rank. Some fans point to the fact that Blair ended up with Chuck and deem that enough to shower it with praise.
It’s reasonable for some viewers to want a little more, but then it’s equally reasonable to point out that they’ve been watching Gossip Girl for the past five years; this is a show more concerned with the Teen Choice Awards than they are the Emmy’s. That’s not a criticism either, by the way. Gossip Girl knew exactly what it was and it delivered.
However, it’s still a fairly controversial episode, not only because of the slapdash happy ending (can’t please everyone every time), but also because of Gossip Girl herself. Or rather, himself.
In the moment, it’s a gasp-worthy twist for Dan Humphrey to be Gossip Girl, but when you start to think about it, it falls apart.
Gossip Girl frequently acted against Dan’s interest, even harassing his sister Little Jay out of NYC; something the finale tries and fails to waffle away.
The finale ultimately proved satisfactory to the typical Gossip Girl audience, even if you can poke a lot of holes in it.
