Ahead even of Mad Men, The Sopranos stands tall as one of the best finales ever, alongside the likes of Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under and M*A*S*H.
Despite being critically revered and generally praised by the fans though, that hasn’t stopped it being one of the most controversial and debated finales in television. It’s the good kind of controversial, where everyone loved it for different reasons, but the ambiguous nature of the ending certainly got people talking.
The majority of the episode focuses on what you might expect The Sopranos finale to have focussed on; wrapping up the loose ends of the mob storylines. These had been winding down running into the finale, and it was a smart decision to do the basics right.
It certainly gets ambiguous after that, and just like Mad Men, anything open to interpretation will cause division in the fanbase.
