The excessive violence and delicate themes the series deals with dont help much. But the tip of the iceberg has to be with several murders related to the series (just typing Murders related to in Google shows Dexter as your third option). Mark Twitchell is the most notorious one, he was found guilty of the murder of John Altinger. Not only he planned his murder on the style of Dexter Morgan, but also adopted the name for a fake Facebook account, and several other websites in which he gathered information about his victims. And while this incidents have affected negatively the series, there are no plans for cancelling it, or change its content.
