1. The Red Wedding
HBOFifty years from now, we'll still be talking about the Red Wedding. It'll be a celebrated part of television history, like the mystery of who killed Laura Palmer, or when we found out that Henry Blake's plane was shot down over the Sea of Japan. Of course, by that point our emotional wounds over the events of that fateful day will have healed (we hope). Because right now, a full season after it happened, it still hurts. The Red Wedding is without a doubt the most brutally cruel thing George R.R. Martin has ever done, and that's saying quite a bit. As you watch the build up to the worst wedding reception ever, you can't shake the feeling that something is not right here. Something bad is going to happen. But nothing could prepare you for the sheer carnage that takes place at the Red Wedding, all the pain and despair and blood. The scene is orchestrated perfectly, with Catelyn Stark noticing first that the doors are being barred, and then realizing the horrifying truth of what was about to happen to them. Then it gets to the bloodshed faster than the characters (or the audience) expect -- they waste no time in gutting Robb Stark's poor wife in front of him, while he is forced to watch but unable to intervene. He goes next, this time with his mother the helpless onlooker, her worst nightmares coming true. It's a merciless barrage of the senses, and honestly? This is why we have trust issues.
