3. Sir Rodrik Cassel's Botched Beheading

RodrikcasselHBOWhat's the only thing worse than a successful beheading? A beheading that goes horribly, horribly wrong. When Theon takes Winterfell with his small army of Ironborn, he has to prove to the troops that he is truly one of them. After being held hostage by the Starks for so many years, and practically being raised as Robb's brother, it's understandable that they would want assurances that his loyalties were not conflicted. To accomplish this, he has to show no mercy to his captives at Winterfell. Which means that he has to execute Sir Rodrik Cassel, the Master-at-Arms of Winterfell, and the man who taught him how to wield a sword. After Cassel spits at him, he has no choice -- he'll lose the respect of his men if he appears weak. But Theon struggles with the idea of killing someone who he was so close with, and he botches the execution. In the end, it takes three blows and a kick to finish the job, and we are witness to it all, both the gruesome death of the knight as well as Theon's tears as the task becomes harder than he could have imagined.
