10 Most Emotional Moments In It's A Sin
2. Ritchie Comes Out
And so we come to the final episode, and arguably the most heartbreaking of the show's run. Here, the focus remains on Ritchie, who is doing his best to fight the disease at this point, but is fighting a losing battle.
This particular moment comes about halfway through, when Ritchie's parents turn up unannounced at the hospital he is being cared for in and, as they realise which ward he's on, Ritchie is finally forced to tell them he is gay, but also that he has AIDS. It's dreadful and awkward to witness - Ritchie is still the victim, but is clearly so fearful of his parents reaction.
There's a real mixture of emotions here - on the one hand, you sympathise with his parents as they find out their son is dying, but then there's also that undercurrent of anger as they finally question why they didn't know already, and why their son felt the need to keep his life a secret from them.
Keeley Hawes and Shaun Dooley pull off incredible performances throughout the show as traditionalist parents who are taken in by the messages of the state and refuse to accept Ritchie as anyone other than an aspiring lawyer with a girlfriend. They remain ignorant as to who he really is, and represent so many parents in that time (and some still today) who acted like this with their children.
