10 Most Expensive TV Show Pilots Ever

4. Terra Nova - $20 Million

The Crown Pilot
20th Television

While all the other entries on this list are good, if not great, shows, Terra Nova stands out as being the only true flop.

It had an awesome premise for sure. A group of humans from 2149 are sent back in time to the land of the dinosaurs in a bid to save their world. And with Steven "I bought dinosaurs back from the dead in Jurassic Park" Spielberg as executive producer, there was surely no way Terra Nova could fail.

Except it did.

While the visual effects were decent, the series was filled with clichéd characters and a predictable plot that underwhelmed audiences.

The production can be best described as long and arduous, with the pilot episode suffering from numerous reshoots after the extensive sets were plagued by torrential rain. There was further turmoil behind-the-scenes as well, with multiple re-writes and producers coming-and-going. With so many special effects to render, the pilot alone cost approximately $20 million to make.

While audience ratings remained consistent, 20th Century Fox could simply not justify the expense of another season and Terra Nova was cancelled after just 13 episodes.
