There's a certain point in every mysterious character's lifespan when they have to crack and show some weakness rather than continue to exude power without consequence.
Fans wouldn't have enjoyed another season of Melisandre's riddles, dominance over inferior minds, and an arrogance that became repetitive. The story didn't need it either.
Instead, the Thrones creators humanised her character. They filled her with regret, they filled her with doubt, they rocked her foundations and that's something she needed.
