10 Most Inappropriate Moments In Star Trek: The Original Series
6. The Dark Side Of Captain Kirk - The Enemy Within
Star Trek: The Original Series often feels more like watching a horror anthology than a science fiction serial. Almost every episode involves the Enterprise gang investigating a spooky planet or facing off against a powerful monster, trying to solve that episode's mystery while the dead bodies stack up.
The horror stories don't get much scarier than this one. In The Enemy Within, Kirk's being is split into two different versions of himself. Both versions house different aspects of his personality: one Kirk is gentle, timid, and indecisive, while the other is aggressive, violent, and all instinct. The idea is that all humans have a good and a dark side, and the trick is knowing how to balance them out.
Unfortunately, this leads to a horrific scene in which Dark Kirk violently attacks Yeoman Janice Rand, attempting to have sex with her. Rand fights back as best she can, and the attempt is mercifully cut short when another crew member arrives on the scene. The whole ordeal is, in all honesty, one of the most upsetting moments in Trek history.
What makes it even worse is discovering that Rand is willing to let Kirk away with it. When Spock and Good Kirk question her, she says she wasn't go to say anything because she didn't want to get the Captain in trouble.
If all of that isn't bad enough, the episode ends with Spock poking fun at Rand and high-key implying that he thinks she secretly enjoyed the horrifying ordeal.
