10 Most Infamous SNL Musical Guests

9. Frank Zappa

There's a certain amount of professionalism when it comes to playing SNL. After stripping away everything about being in a studio, it's the ultimate test when you're put in front of live television and forced to give the best performance you can. When you're working with someone like Frank Zappa though, the amount of crazy moments almost happen by design.

Given that Zappa was already known as one of the most eccentric people in show business at the time of his appearance, his time as host went...about as well as you could have imagined. Never really fitting in with the straightforward brand of comedy, a lot of Zappa's show was a lot more freeform than usual, as he would casually either go off on a tangent or break the fourth wall whenever he could. Even down to his opening monologue and traditional segments, Zappa did not care at all, going so far as to point out that he was reading off of cue cards during one of the segments.

Granted, this was a time when SNL was just starting to find their feet still, when most of the hosts and musical guests were brought on on the sheer shock factor alone. For as zany as Zappa could be at the best of times, this felt more like an old man taking the piss out of commercialism.
