10 Most Infamous SNL Musical Guests

6. Rage Against the Machine

It goes without saying that when it comes to the musical guests on SNL, the music comes first. No matter how many times Will Ferrell might show up to play cowbell with a particular band, the core focus of the segment should be on the ability to deliver a kick ass tune for the viewers at home. If you know anything about Rage Against the Machine though, you know that nothing is that straightforward.

When asked to play on SNL for the first time, Rage were put on with host Steve Forbes, who was running for President around the same time. Being vehemently against his political agenda, Rage decided to do a bit of silent protest and put upside down American flags on their amplifiers, intended as signaling a sign of distress. After insistence from producers to take them down, Rage finally relented until they performed Bulls on Parade.

At the 11th hour, Rage's roadies put the flags back up, after which a huge fight broke out between both parties as soon as they went to commercial break. Ever since, Rage has been banned from every playing on SNL again, citing their political agenda as the main reason they were booted. While it's understandable that you have to follow network guidelines, you should know what you're getting yourself into when you hire someone like Rage in the first place.
