Magical high-school girl transformation shows are one of the main pillars of anime. Madoka Magica stands out among all the others. While it may seem on the surface to be a generic sparkly show like Sailor Moon, it quickly turns into a graphic, disturbing, horror-filled nightmare for the young girls who are given superpowers by the emotionless Kyubey.

The cat-like being known as Kyubey is from a race of beings called the Incubators. He uses magical girls to fight other beings called Switches. His overall goal is to prevent the heat death of the universe and the end of everything.

Since the Incubators have no emotions, they don't really care about the magical girls they use and what happens to them. It is quickly revealed that the powers the girls are given will actually kill them if they use them too much.

Kyubey even reveals that the Switches themselves are just magical girls who have been corrupted by evil emotions. Meaning that this cat monster is making young girls fight each other to the death simply to create energy sources to keep the universe alive.

Kyubey's betrayal is more of a necessary evil but it is evil nonetheless. He will kill as many girls as is necessary to achieve his species' goal, something that was quite a shock to the genre of magical highschool girls and would terrify fans for years to come.
