Realistically, this entire list could have been made up from deaths in Game of Thrones. The fantasy series has killed record numbers of important characters in ruthless fashion. Many were surprised when Ned Stark, the apparent hero of the series, lost his head at the end of the first season, despite the fact that he was played by Sean Bean. The assassination of Renly Baratheon at the hands of a shadow baby, the brutal skull crushing of Oberyn Martell, the toilet-based shooting of Tywin Lannister, all of them left the audience aghast.

But there has likely been no scene more shocking to audiences than the Red Wedding. In the ninth episode of the show’s third season, King in the North Robb Stark attends the wedding of his uncle. With Robb having broken a vow to the wedding’s host in an earlier season, the atmosphere is tense, but no one (who hadn’t read the books, at least) could have foreseen what would happen.

Following the bedding ceremony, Robb, his mother Catelyn, his wife Talisa, his unborn child and all of his followers are brutally murdered. There are stabbings, crossbow attacks, cut throats. The whole scene is turned completely on its head in a matter of seconds, and one of the most violent and chilling moments in television history plays out.
