10 Most Shocking Moments From Love, Death, & Robots
2. The Arm Break – Helping Hand
Newton’s third law of motion: “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” His second law: “An object in rest remains at rest and an object in motion remains in motion, unless acted upon by an outside force.”
Alexandria is floating through space away from her station with no friction or outside objects to stop her (Newton’s 2nd law). She enacts the 3rd law; removing her sleeve, detrimentally exposing her arm to the harshness of space, and throwing it to projectile herself towards the space station.
When she misses her mark by mere inches, she decides that severely desperate times call for severely desperate measures. She breaks off her arm, 127 hours style, and uses it in the same way she used the sleeve, only this time successfully. Watching her not only break her arm but break it clean off is one of the most gruesome moments in media, animated or otherwise.
