A major death is a classic method to guarantee drama in a series finale and one that Game of Thrones producers have used successfully on several occasions, which is to be expected of a show which kills off characters as often as this one does.

What was unexpected, though, was the identity of the murderer in season four’s The Children, as Tyrion Lannister fired two crossbows into the heart of his father while he sat on the throne (not that one that everybody is fighting over).

Tyrion had previously shown himself to be a great thinker, not a killer. He paid Bronn to do that for him. But a lifetime's worth of frustration at his treatment by Tywin, culminating with the Hand of the King sentencing his innocent son to death, led Tyrion to pull the trigger himself as he firstly strangled his treacherous lover Shae before turning to his father.

The arrogance of Tywin to think that he could talk his way out of Tyrion’s firing line, and the sudden bolt of the first arrow released into his chest made for a wonderfully tense scene which ended with one of the show’s great villains getting his comeuppance.
