The opening season of GOT had been praised by fans and critics alike and needed a strong finish to round off the outstanding start that Benioff and Weiss had made interpreting George R.R. Martin’s novels.
They delivered with the birth of the Mother of Dragons, a watershed moment for the evolution of Daenerys, who began the series as meat for trade and ended it as the leader of a khalasar.
Daenerys had a funeral pyre built for Khal Drogo and placed her dragon eggs inside it. She set fire to the pyre and walked into the flames, seemingly to die with her late husband. In the morning, Jorah and the Dothraki found her unharmed. Climbing her unburnt body were three dragons, the first to be seen in over 100 years, kneeling before her were her spellbound followers.
The visuals in this sequence were stunning and served to show the true power of the Targaryen dynasty that lived inside Daenerys.
