10 Most Underrated Community Episodes

1. Mixology Certification

Community Basic Human Anatomy
NBC

Community became famous for its concept episodes, parodies, and paintball. That said, they do grounded and human episodes just as well. Season 2's Mixology Certification may be the best of Community's more down-to-Earth outings.

The episode follows Troy on his 21st birthday. The study group promises to throw him a fun first legal drink party, but Jeff and Britta clash over what bar to take him to. They compromise, and end up going to a bar they don't know that Shirley used to frequent. At the bar, Jeff and Britta continue to squabble, Annie reinvents herself based on her fake ID, Abed uses a man's romantic interest in him as a chance to talk about Farscape, Shirley has to hide drunk pictures of herself from the group, and an injured Piece can't even get through the door. Troy's friends ruined his birthday by making it all about them.

When Jeff and Britta figure out that they wanted to go to the same bar all along, Troy realizes that, despite his age, he's just as wise as they are. In the next scene, he proves it, when he reminds Annie of how wonderful she is. Troy saves his birthday, and the study group.

Troy is, in many ways, the glue holding the study group together. He's a friend to Shirley, a son figure to Pierce, a mentee (and mentor) to Jeff, a boyfriend/friend to Britta, a reminder of how far Annie has come, and everything to Abed. It's no accident that when he's not there in Remedial Chaos Theory, it results in The Darkest Timeline, and the show becomes considerably heavier after he leaves. Mixology Certification reminds us why Troy is so special, and makes his departure in Geothermal Escapism hit so hard.
