Show: Sesame Street Forget all the talk of whether or not Bert and Ernie are gay. Forget that they're muppets (they are, and they are some of the only muppets to have appeared on their own show, as well as on The Muppet Show). Bert and Ernie are simply classic, iconic characters, a couple of guys living in a basement apartment learning how to get along together. Hey - we didn't say this had to be all romantic couples, did we? Bert and Ernie appeared way back in the pilot episode of Sesame Street in 1974, and were the only part of the episode, screened for test audiences, that anyone liked. Based off their reception, it was decided that muppets should be the star of the show, and that they should interact with the human cast of the series, two things that were not the case in the pilot. The show's premise was reworked to incorporate these new ideas, and thanks to Bert and Ernie, we have the children's classic we know and love today.
