1. The X Files (1993)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQoRXhS7vlU And so we reach the No 1 spot on our list, which couldn't have been fairly taken by any other show other than the X-Files. Spanning 9 seasons and an incredible 202 episodes, it's one of the most highly recognizable shows of the 1990s. For a show featuring aliens, monsters and Government conspiracies it seemed only appropriate that an equally creepy atmosphere and stance be taken - the title music as composed by Mark Snow, whose also responsible for Smallville and One Tree Hill's compositions among others. As with many great moments in music history, the effect of echo was apparently created by accident, according too the X Files DVD Special Features. Snow said that he had made several changes working on the song to please Carter, all of which were well received but just didn't have a special thing he was looking for. Yet as Carter was leaving the room Snow threw his hand onto the keyboard in frustration which contained an echo that Carter said was "it" and immediately asked for the piece. The song was released in the UK as a single and went to No 2 in the charts (I'm not sure what kept it off the top spot but I'm sure it was something useless like Take That) - personally, the version recorded by Mike Oldfield is absolutely brilliant, proving that even theme songs can have their place in music history. Mr "Tubular Bells" himself added his own special mixture to the track and made you think of it as a kind of new age sci-fi remix. Take a listen, if you dare! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEJ_5uZhPWQ
