While some may see this as a tenuous link, allow me to explain why the CTU fall squarely under the detective category. Their entire job revolves around investigating and preventing terrorist attacks, so the sleuthing skills required for this are self explanatory. They are supposedly the last line of defence between those loony extremists and mainland USA, so why do they miss so much of what's happening? If the whole point of their being is to identify terrorist threats then how come they only ever seem to become aware of them a day before they occur. If they actually did their jobs then Jack Bauer could sit and enjoy some alone time without having to pistol-whip his millionth villain into bloody oblivion. While it's undoubtedly fun to watch Bauer destroy everything that looks at him the wrong way, it shows a serious failing within the agency that they need to keep setting him these 24 hour deadlines. It's not just that they miss these teeny little terror cells and bomb threats, they've been infiltrated on numerous occasions. We're meant to believe they're the best at their job when they allow their headquarters to be gassed from within? I call shenanigans on their credentials.
