10 Reasons Why Frasier Is The Best US Sitcom In History
5. The Christmas Episodes
This might not seem such an obvious one but when you compare to that other behemoth, Friends, Frasier actually has festive episodes. Friends sets episodes at Christmas but, bar some snow, you'd never know it was a holiday episode. If anything, Friends is more concerned with Thanksgiving. Was this an agreement between the writers? Probably not, but it is a happy coincidence. Frasier, therefore, leads the way with episodes that are both funny and touching and laced with festive cheers (and arguments). Obviously, the classic Frasier Grinch episode is a great marker as Frasier is determined to buy educational gifts for Frederick even though the wrongs gifts have been delivered and he must go to the shops on Christmas Eve in search of a 'Living Brain'. When all else fails, Frasier is allowed to open his gift from Martin early to discover it's what Freddie wanted all along, an Outlaw Laser Robo Geek. To be honest, the Christmas episodes put you in the festive mood and make you consider some of the reasons we like and dislike Christmas. Not a festive episode goes by with an argument or some tears and perhaps this is most obvious in We Two Kings where a family argument leads to Martin working on Christmas Day and the Crane boys determined to right their wrongs. Perhaps the best festive episode though is Miracle On 3rd Or 4th Street where Frasier works Christmas Day and ends up in a diner with homeless people. It highlights many themes in the series as Frasier realises his wrongs and then must take help from people he never expected...and leave his BMW in the snow as he walks home in the cold.
