10 Reasons Why Data Was A Dangerous Threat To The Enterprise

6. He Once Lied To The Entire Crew Of The Enterprise

This happens in an episode called “Clues.” On the way to investigate an M Class planet, the Enterprise encounters a wormhole. Everyone, but Data, is knocked out. When the crew wakes up Data tells them they’ve only been unconscious for a few minutes.

The problem is that a bunch of clues around the ship tell a different story. After some investigation, the crew discovers they’ve lost an entire day’s worth of time. If that wasn’t disturbing enough, Picard begins to suspect Data of lying to the crew.

This is strange since Data is almost incapable of lying. Straying from the truth is a violation of Data’s “moral subroutines.” Now, as it turns out, Data is only lying because Picard ordered him to then Picard’s memory was wiped.

This does reveal Data’s capacity for guile and subterfuge. These talents were previously unknown by the crew. Fortunately, he’s not very good at either.
