10 Reasons Why Data Was A Dangerous Threat To The Enterprise

2. There Was That Time That Data Commandeered The Ship And No One Could Stop Him

In the episode “Brothers,” the Enterprise is on the way to a starbase. A young boy aboard the ship is in desperate need of an emergency medical procedure that isn’t possible aboard the ship.

That’s when Data intervenes. Out of nowhere, he sets a new course for the ship and cuts off life support to the bridge. The bridge crew escapes to Engineering while Data stays behind. Lucky for him he doesn’t need pesky things like air to breathe.

Data then locks the crew out of the computer so they can’t change course. The Enterprise arrives at a planet inhabited by Noonian Soong. From there Data beams down, leaving the crew with the computer locked out. His encryption is so complex no one can break it.

Turns out, Data didn’t do any of this willingly. Apparently, Soong had activated a homing beacon that called Data to the planet. The beacon did the same for Data’s brother Lore.

The reason Soong wanted Data was so he could install an emotion chip in Data’s brain. Lore, who happens to look exactly like Data tricks Soong into giving him the emotion chip instead.

For good measure Lore murders Dr. Soong.

After that the crew of the Enterprise welcomes Data back aboard as if nothing happened. Like he didn’t just pirate the ship and almost kill a young boy. As for Data’s excuse, he said he didn’t remember doing any of it.

That’s awfully convenient, Data.

This gets us to the final, and most serious, security risk when it comes to having Data on board the Enterprise.
