1. Counterpart
Jesus Christ, Starz! What in the name of hell is your goddamn problem with advertising your shows properly and gaining them a viewership?! This one shouldn't have even taken that much effort! J. K. Simmons is in it, for god's sake.
Counterpart is everything you could possibly want from a sci-fi show. It's got a tightly knit, complex narrative involving inter-dimensional espionage. The dialogue and writing in general is also razor sharp. The highlight, however, are the performances - and in this case that word means a couple of things.
Every actor in Counterpart is utterly astounding in absolutely every scene, but the real prize goes to those who play two completely different versions of themselves - in particular lead actor J. K. Simmons. There is something endlessly satisfying in watching Simmons' Howard Silk have a conversation with himself and every little nuance that Simmons makes sure to subtly highlight. These go from the obvious such as the fact that the two men wear very different clothes to one another and all the way to the fact that both men hold themselves in completely different manners, even down to the way they hold and drink from a glass.
You'd be forgiven for initially thinking that Counterpart was perhaps a little dry, maybe even convoluted - to be fair, it kind of is - but words cannot describe just how perfect a show Counterpart was, so get on it.
