8. Il-Nam Was Behind It All - Squid Game

Squid Game was undeniably last year's most unexpected breakout TV hit - a brilliantly crafted series with a deliciously simple premise and one which it took full advantage of.

Yet one of its final plot twists proved rather divisive with fans - a climactic big reveal that felt more about easy shock value than, you know, actually making sense.

In the show's unforgettable sixth episode, the kindly, dying old man Il-Nam (O Yeong-su) seemingly laid down his life in order for Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) to progress to the next stage of the Squid Game.

However, the season finale executes the mind-blowing rug-pull that Il-Nam, who we didn't actually see get shot dead, is still alive.

More to the point, he's actually the wealthy guy running the damn Squid Game, revealing to Gi-hun that he created it out of boredom, picked the various games from his own childhood, and chose to participate out of nostalgia for those games.

While this twist was certainly shocking, to many it felt ass-pulled for the sake of a WTF surprise rather than because it was actually logical within the context of the story.
