10 Recent TV Shows That Failed Hard (But Should Have Been Great)

7. Hand Of God

This early Amazon show had a cracking premise: Ron Perlman’s corrupt judge undergoes a traumatic meltdown after his son and his wife are lethally attacked. He soon begins to receive vivid yet accurate visions - ones he believes come from God - that directly help him to conduct his revenge.

Its pilot certainly opened things up with an enticing cliffhanger premise, and with the introduction of Garret Dillahunt’s reformed neo-nazi coming into play, it appeared to be shaping up into a smartly written and shockingly dark twist on the crime drama, with two stellar central performances.

Despite Perlman and Dillahunt being reliably fantastic, the rest of the elements misfired. The writers basically played up the nastier aspects with absolutely zero substance underneath it, hoping it would distract from the shallow central body of work.

Add to that the enticing ‘visions’ and their possible origins never really came into play in a worthwhile manner. Most important though, it trudged forward at a snail's pace, yet - for those patient enough - it didn't have anywhere interesting it wanted to go.

It’s a shame since, with the premise, Perlman and Dillahunt, and Amazon willing to pump a solid budget into proceedings, it could have added up to something really special.

As is, it was quickly forgotten after two lame duck seasons.
