10 Red Dwarf Episodes You Absolutely Must See

6. Legion

Another entry from Season Six, Legion is one of the most unique and memorable episodes of the show, mainly thanks to the titular character. He's unlike any other antagonist in the show, being neither human, robot or genetically engineered lifeform, but rather a gestalt entity that functions as a composite of the minds of those present on his space station. He's certainly one of the highest concept characters to feature in the show, but also one of the most unstable.

When the Dwarfers are first drawn to Legion's space station he seems to be a gracious host, seeing to the crew's every want and need. He also appears to be an accomplished scientist and artist, with his work on full display for the Dwarfers to admire. He even performs an impromptu appendectomy to remove Lister's inflamed appendix and gifts Rimmer with a hard-light drive, allowing him to interact with the physical world (a very significant plot development). However, it turns out that it's all too good to be true, as Legion requires the presence of other beings to exist and intends to keep the Dwarfers on the space station whether they like it or not.

This actually generates quite a bit of tension and makes for quite a frightening third act, as the episode takes on more of a monster movie feel. It's this mixture of humour, horror and genuine creativity that makes this episode so good. Plus, it features the iconic red alert/blue alert gag. What else could you want?
