The Calm Before is arguably The Walking Dead's most daring episode to date. Fans of the comics knew the big reveal was coming, but the writers switched it up and managed to make it both petrifying and shocking from TV and comic fans alike.

After Daryl, Michonne, Carol and Yumiko are cornered and outnumbered by Beta and his Whisperers, Alpha shows Daryl her insanely large horde, threatening to use it on the various communities if they break Alpha's new rules.

As Daryl and the small group reunite to head back home, they meet a beaten Siddiq and find that many of their friends have been killed and beheaded, their reanimated heads placed on pikes.

Watching the characters back in the communities look for their friends and loved ones only for the camera to quickly cut to them dead without any real explanation is a horrid gut-punch, and remains so even after the first viewing.

Tara, Enid and Henry amongst the dead, this moment capped off one of the show's most shocking and scary moments, and showed that the Whisperers weren't just terrifying - they're also a genuinely powerful threat. Which just makes them even scarier.
