Few creations in TV history have instilled the sheer levels of dread that BOB achieves in his sporadic appearances across Twin Peaks' original run. Frank Silva wound up playing the character by accident, and that only lent itself to the unsettling, otherworldly nature of the character. Every time he appeared was a horror, but it all came to a terrifying crescendo in Lonely Souls.

This is where the true extent of BOB is revealed; that he's a being of pure evil, with a malevolence almost difficult to comprehend. Just the sight of him in this episode is enough to make your skin crawl.

However, it comes with the reveal that Leland Palmer is the murder, but one inhabited by BOB. It gradually dawns on the viewer, as he looks into the mirror after drugging his wife, and we see the reflection of BOB states back - and then Maddy comes down. BOB approaches and she lets out screams of such terror you really feel it with her.

The sequence where he dances with her, flitting between Leland and BOB and kissing and assaulting is some of David Lynch's most frightening, visually disturbing work to date, creating a moment of such unease and terror that it's impossible to look away, no matter how desperately you want to.
