10 Scariest X-Files Episodes Of All Time

4. The Host - Season 2, Episode 2

X-Files The Host

The Host does for going to the bathroom what Jaws did for swimming in the ocean. The fear factor in this one is down solely to the episode's monster, Flukeman, a super-evolved fluke worm (a product of the Chernobyl chemical disaster) who dwells in the sewers of New Jersey. Again, this is one that could have been disastrous had it not been approached right.

On paper, a giant worm-like man who lives in the sewers sounds like an eye-rolling premise (even by X-Files standards) and the costume could have been problematic but, by waiting until the final few scenes of the episode to show the creature, the episode manages to maintain an element of suspense and fear throughout.

The Host is great B-movie fun with a memorable villain. The way the Flukeman moves and the pained noise he makes are deeply disturbing, and the suit isn't actually half-bad, either. Critics and fans generally agree that the Flukeman was one of the strongest monsters of the week the series had and that The Host is one of the best episodes of the second season. It's certainly one of the scariest.
