2. Fresh Prince of Bel Air - Papas Got a Brand New Excuse
Can a great performance be called such when the actor is meant to be playing himself? Regardless of what you think of Will Smiths acting capabilities, he can play Will Smith
very well. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was a smash hit and its hard to find someone in their twenties that cant sing the theme song on command (double points if you know past the first verse into the album version). What a lot of people forget is that the show had some quite dark moments, ranging from Will getting shot to Hilarys fiancée dying in a bungee jumping accident
while he proposes to her on TV. The best moment, however, falls somewhere between getting mugged and somebody dying. In Papas Got A Brand New Excuse, Wills dad, Lou, comes back into his life after Lou abandoned him as a child. And thats just the premise. The final scene sees Lou walking out on Wills life again, but this time he doesnt get such a clean break. Will is expecting to take a long trip with Lou and sees right through his ploy of needing to take care of some business. What follows is Will going off on an emotional tirade of showing how hes grown up without his dad and hell keep on going, becoming a far better man than his father before showing just a tiny chink in his resolve with How come he dont want me, man?
