10 Seriously Overlooked British TV Shows
4. Chasing Shadows
Quite why Chasing Shadows only managed four episodes before disappearing from our schedules is, frankly, beyond me, especially considering the talent of the core cast and the promise it demonstrated.
Focusing on the work of missing persons units, the incomparable Reece Shearsmith plays DS Sean Stone, whose manner and intensity have him effectively exiled to this oft-overlooked department, there finding Ruth Hattersley (Alex Kingston), an analyst from the Missing Persons Bureau, and DCI Carl Pryor (Noel Clarke).
This trio play very well off each other, balancing the somewhat stock elements of the ambitious young copper and the socially-awkward genius types which genuine characterful performances. The result is that a series that might have descended into generic forgettable fare emerged as something truly interesting.
It may have been the sound of the premise that put ITV off making anymore than these four episodes, but if you go and give them a watch, I'm sure you'll agree that Chasing Shadows was a major missed opportunity, if only to give us some more Reece Shearsmith on our screens.
