10 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching Arrested Development

4. Surely's Affliction Of BS

Arrested Development
Fox / Netflix

In the 16th episode of the first season, Maeby creates a sick alter-ego named "Surely Fünke." She created her to score donations from the students at her school. Surely was bound to a wheelchair, wore glasses, had a large nose, and suffered from a fictional disease called BS.

She came back again in a season three episode to prove that the Miss Inner Beauty pageant being held at the Church and State Fair won't judge based on inner beauty; rather, the girls who were outwardly more attractive would win. In this appearance, she dropped the surname Fünke and adopted Wolfbeak.

She was certain her alter ego wouldn't win the pageant, but she was quickly proven wrong. The judges' sympathy for Surely's plight elevated her to win the contest, pushing out the beautiful Hope Loblaw and the plainer-looking Ann Veal.

Two episodes before her first appearance Surely made a brief cameo in the form of a poster. As Maeby and George Michael are walking through the halls of their school, they pass a poster, which is seen for only a moment. If you look closely and pause the video, you will see that the poster is of Surely with the text, "Hold on Surely," as it was raising awareness and support for her battle against BS.
