10 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching Supernatural
3. Baby
Dean's 1967 Impala, or "Baby" as he calls her, has been an important part of the show since its first episode. Eric Kripke initially was planning on having the car be a 65' Mustang, but his neighbor helpfully pointed out that it should be a 67' Impala "because you can put a body in the truck."
And so, the iconic car was born. Fans have grown to know and love the car that was passed down to Dean by his father, and one special episode featured the Impala as an equal character within the narrative.
In 'Baby', the 4th episode of the 11th season, all the filming is done from the perspective of the car. This gives a raw, slice of life feel to the episode that was unique for the show. What fans might not have noticed in a first viewing was the equally unique take on the soundtrack.
Nineteen episodes of Supernatural have featured scenes with diegetic music, but in the case of Baby the entire score was done in this style. Any music used within the episode was heard by the characters, most of it from the radio of the Impala. Baby and the found-footage episode Bitten are the only two episodes to use only diegetic music.
